Following nearly a year of preparations, eight flatbed semi-trailers carrying the parts for the Krauss Mauffei 3200T pulled up to our production location in Leeuwarden in January 2019. Over the weeks that followed, the machine was assembled and then commissioned. During that period, the entire machine was tested and calibrated. A six-axis robot (ABB / Acotech) with a reach of up to 3.9m and a hoist capacity of 90 kg was also installed above the machine, and the new 50T overhead crane was put into operation.

Making all sorts of arrangements beforehand

Purchasing such a large machine involves overcoming quite a few challenges.

For example, technical modifications were made in the production hall, and the power supply and foundation were upgraded in the summer of 2018. To make sure that the floor would be able to support the 3200T, pilings were driven deep into the ground below the building, to a depth of 12 metres. Significant support structures were added, and then concrete was poured into the floor and a steel structure was installed to support the new overhead crane.

Serving clients better & maintaining consistent product quality

The purchase of this ‘slightly smaller big boy’ expands our production capacity and improves our continuity. That allows us to serve our clients even better and gives us the room to continue growing as an organisation.

The 3200T uses less power than a 4000T machine and is equipped with a number of extra features. In addition to high-pressure injection moulding, this machine can also be used for TSG. The new dosing system by Moretto (supplied by Kotraco) offers us the option for gravimetric dosing.

This means that we can dose the material even more accurately, which contributes to a consistent product output with fast and constant flow.
The Moretto is also easier to clean, and there are fewer unused spots in the silo. The reduction in unused space ensures a more even residence time – and ensuring that the material spends the same amount of time in the barrel has a positive impact on the quality of the final product. The dry-air dryer that comes with the Moretto includes a list of preset configurations for the various plastics.
